THE SURFACE

Natural stone, plaster and terracotta are inorganic materials which structure is made of minarals as silicate, carbonate and oxides. This substrated is ideal for a silica based treatment, due to the high compatibility. Usually these surfaces show high water absorption coefficient; when outdoor, they need a water repellent treatment to protect the material from dirt absorption carried by rainwater, from phisical damages due to freezing and thawing and from biological colonization resulting from moist environment.

ADVANTAGES OF THE  SIOX-5 S TREATMENT

SIOX‐5 S (cod. SD2) is a  protective treatment ideal for stone, plaster and terracotta since it minimises the water absorption coefficient, it avoids the accumulation of dirt (different from organic products as protective wax), it does not create a substrate for biological colonisation and in outdoor application is stable to UV irradiation and resistent to acid and alkaline chemical attack. The product enhances the water repellent features of the material without interfere with its natural transpiration.
From a technical and application points of view, the product shows the following advantages:
  • The application is suitable for large absorbent areas (cotto and plasters), increasing the yeld and the speed of the treatment by using brushes, rolls or spray
  • The treatment dries in few minutes and the surface is protected after 30 minutes from the application
  • The product can be applied also on wet plaster or when carbonation is not complete (after 24 hours); the alkaline surface does not undermine the performances of the product; working times in sites and scaffolding presence are reduced.
  • The treatment  can be easily realized in production lines with automated spray or roll systems with subsequent polishing for the removal of excess of product.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Once applied the products cover the pores and the external surface by means of strong chemical bonds. Different from waxes, resins and siloxane, the coating is homogeneus and conformal.

The chemical bond may be realized with silica surfaces (Si-O-Si bond), carbonate materials (Si-O-Ca bond) or oxides showing OH groups on the surface.

The inorganic component of the tratments is bonded to the surface while the functionalized hydrophobic groups are externally oriented to guarantee water repellency. The water and the dirt carried out remain on the surface.

At the same time, the pores and the silica layer are transpiring and permeable to vapour, an important feature especially when the coating is applied on plaster and covering stones.
