Silica film synthesized at room temperature
SIOX-5
SIOX-5 is a technology developed at the University of Padua (Italy) for the protection of materials by applying thin layers of silica (the constituent of glass and quartz).
The products of the SIOX-5 range are liquid and are based on sol-gel technology. Once applied the gel forms a thin silica layer colorless and transparent. The process takes place at room temperature without compromising the treated surface. The nanometric thikness protects while mantaining the aesthetic characteristics of the material. Our formulations are easy to use: they do not need thermal treatments or controlled atmosphere, they could be applied to new or existing objects. SIOX-5 coating are a viable alternative to CVP or PVD treatments.

THE SOL GEL PROCESS

The starting solution is a colloidal suspension of particles from chemical precursors of high purity.
WET GEL
During the process, the use of proper catalysts results in the formation of a wet gel.
FILM DI XEROGEL
The SIOX-5 gel can be easily applied to the material to be treated where it forms a very thin layer of amorphous silica covering uniformly the surface. The surface is dry to the touch in few minutes.
FILM DENSO
The film features improve with time. The densification does not require thermal treatment since it takes place spontaneously reaching the full stability in about 72 hours.

The SIOX-5 products have an high compatibility with silica materials and with surfaces with OH end-groups.
Once applied, the product is self-levelling. The active silica molecules in the formulaton reacts with the treated surface. Strong covalent bonds Si-O-X (where X is the composition of the surface) and water molecules are formed. The formation of bonds continues while water and solvent evaporate.

PERFORMANCES ON NON-ABSORBENT SURFACES
The application of SIOX-5 on smooth and non-absorbent surfaces as glass, reduces the surface roughness. The protection depends on the reduction of both the surface exposed to degradation and the number of OH groups able to react with water.

PERFORMANCES ON POROUS SURFACES
The SIOX-5 products may be applied on porous surfaces. The treatment covers the pores and penetrates in depth while preserving the natural transpiration of the material. The protection results from the functionalized end groups of silica, conferring hydrophobic properties to the treatment.
